In all of the learning I have done since I was diagnosed with this round of cancer, there is one main takeaway: diet may be the #1 factor in whether we are healthy or whether we develop illnesses such as cancer. In the first four parts of this series, I talked about the importance of having an alkaline body pH.
Today, I’m going to tell you how to alkalise your body with your diet. I am going to refer to my personal diet, which is a combination of an alkaline diet, but with a lot more things going on. I am using everything within my power to fight this cancer and become 100% healthy again. That includes diet, supplements, prayer and ultimate faith in God’s plan for me, whichever way it goes.
Why Eat an Alkaline Diet?
The modern diet contains a lot of foods and beverages that acidify the body. In addition, the stress of everyday living can acidify the body. The way I see it, we all have two choices: eat a “normal” diet like “everybody else” and acidify our bodies, or eat an alkaline diet and alkalise our bodies.
Our diets are the #1 factor in whether we have an alkaline or acidic body pH. Your power to determine whether you are healthy or sick starts with your fork. Let’s take a look at what you need to do.
Alkaline Diet: the Basics
If you want my specific diet, you can find it here on the website. My intent today is to give you the basics of an alkaline diet and strategies for implementing it. If you already have a diagnosis of cancer or another debilitating disease, you want to start today. If you are someone who is checking us out because you want to get healthy, you can start slowly.
Remember: the more alkaline-producing foods and beverages you consume, the more alkaline your body will be. The more acid-producing foods and beverages you consume, the more acidic your body will be. If you have a few things you don’t want to give up, you may be able to keep them. That’s why we test our pH every day. The idea is to get your body to an alkaline state. This is how to do it.
Foundatlon: Whole, Organic Foods
The foundation of an alkaline diet is whole, unprocessed, organic foods. Processed foods and agricultural chemicals are acid-forming and toxic. They not only make your body more acidic, they also make it harder for your liver to flush the acids out. If you eat all whole, organic, unprocessed foods, your body will begin to alkalise from day one.
The bulk of your diet will be fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, whole grains, seed milks, seed butters, nut milks and nut butters.
You have probably been taught that milk is “healthy.” In reality, milk is acid-forming and mucous-forming. Mother’s milk is healthy for babies, but the processed milk of an animal is not healthy for humans. If you enjoy drinking milk, try drinking milk from nuts, grains or seeds.
Whenever possible, eat raw foods. Raw foods have the most vitamins and minerals. They also have enzymes, which are killed in the cooking process. Enzymes help your body absorb food and help process waste for elimination. They are the most alkaline and are the least difficult to digest because they come with their own digestive enzymes.
The foods that alkalise you the most are leafy vegetables, lemons, herbs and superfoods such as spirulina, chlorella, wheatgrass and barleygrass. Lemons are acidic, but they alkalise the body. The essential oil that can be squeezed from the rind is even more alkalising.
Juicing is a great way to get more phytonutrients into your body because you can consume the most digestible part of more foods more quickly. If you are diabetic or hypoglycemic, you may want to juice more vegetables and be careful with fruits. Be careful with beets and carrots, too, as they also contain a lot of sugar.
You want sweeteners to be whole and minimally processed. Stevia is the best sweetener, but you can also use raw honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar and brown rice syrup. Eventually, you want to get away from sweeteners altogether.
I posted about the benefits of alkaline water on this blog. If you can’t alkalise your water, spring or well water will do. Filtered water is OK but you need to replenish the minerals taken out by the filter. If you are doing to drink before a meal, drink 15 to 30 minutes before the meal. The water gives your body raw materials to produce digestive acids and enzymes.
For every 15 kilos you weigh, drink approximately a litre of water a day.
What to Get Rid Of
You will notice we didn’t mention meat. You should start cutting down on meat or eliminate it altogether. Salmon and organic, free range chicken are good choices if you must have meat, but you want to keep meat down to twice a week.
Basically, you want to get rid of all processed foods. Processing makes foods more acidic and acid-forming. White sugar, white flour, pasteurised or homogenised dairy products and white rice are all acid forming and should be avoided if possible. Lunch meats, artificial sweeteners, canned foods, MSG and food colouring are all acid-forming.
Carbonated beverages, coffee, stimulant teas and processed juices should also be avoided.
As you can see, I care deeply about this. Eating an alkaline diet is the lynchpin of my efforts to become cancer free. Cancer cannot live in an alkaline environment. I am trying to starve cancer of the acids and sugars it needs to survive.. Once again, I encourage you to look at my personal diet, which is on this website.
I have mentioned my faith in God and the fact that I pray a lot. Prayer and its close relative, meditation, both help alkalise the body. So does a good night’s sleep.
I hope you enjoyed this series. I also hope it was helpful and may inspire you to alkalise your body. Thanks again for reading and God bless.
